The man in the photo is my oldest living relative, at over eighty-five years of age. I believe he is my great-grandfather's second-cousin, but I could be mistaken on how exactly we are related.

Regardless, the pure joy in this man's eyes when he saw my father is unbelievable. I cannot describe in words the happiness that glowed from this man's face. Of the more than one thousand photos I took during my trip to India, this is my favorite.

That is just amazing... seeing so much history right in front of you is really a gift.

Did you get to talk to many of your relatives? Did they speak much English?

That's really cool. I'm glad you got a chance to meet more of your family. It looks like you had a great time on your trip.

Oh, I almost forgot to prase the amazing photography job. This literally looks like something from a magazine. Excellent work.

I saw a LOT of relatives -- many of whom, like the one in this photo, I didn't even know existed until I went there. While almost everyone on either side of my family speaks English fairly well (albeit with a heavy accent and imperfect sentence structure), they still speak more Punjabi than anything else. They talked more with my parents than they did with my sister and me -- and why wouldn't they? They hadn't seen my parents in decades, so there was a lot of catching up to do.

Thanks. My dad actually said I should submit some of these photos to a magazine, though I doubt such a low-resolution photo would look good enough in print.
:iconforbiddenmyth:
Wow... still, that must have been so amazing, just to BE there even! :D

I wouldn't be so sure. I've been looking at collections of photographs from National Geographic, a publication loved and revered for their photography, and a lot of their best shots are surprisingly low resolution--most of it's before digital pixilation was a concern, but there's a lot of film grain due to the necessity of having a high ISO to prevent motion blur. The primary concern of journalistic photography is to accurately capture the subject, and to show something to catch the public's interest. Techinical perfection is not always a primary concern.

Yeah. Eating cashews and drinking tea with my dad's old friends was quite a treat, despite the fact that I understood very little of what they were saying.

Still, I'd like to get a bit more practice with my SLR before I start submitting my rather hit-or-miss photographic work to National Geographic.

...though I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try. Hmm...
